Toyota Driving Expectations

In the United States, the crash rate per mile driven for 16-19 year-olds is four times that of older drivers, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
That’s why, in 2004, we created Toyota Driving Expectations, a free program for teen drivers and their parents.
Toyota Driving Expectations is a free program for teens and their parents.
The goal of Toyota Driving Expectations is to proactively take America's driving youth through a safe driving experience. The dynamic course does more than inform, it takes teens the next step beyond driver's education and introduces "real world" obstacles, conditions and distractions in a safe and controlled driving environment.
Another unique feature of the program is the inclusion of the parents, which allows them to gain valuable insight into the challenges facing teen drivers today.

Energy Research

At Toyota, our vision for a mobile society in harmony with the environment extends across all of our operations and through the full life cycle of our products - from design to production to use to disposal. When it comes to energy, we strive to match the choice of energy solutions to local resources and conditions. Our researchers around the world are working on local solutions to fuel a sustainable society.
  • We've established a battery research division dedicated to the pursuit of an innovative next-generation battery. As part of our commitment to hybrid powertrains, we will increase annual battery production capacity at Panasonic EV Energy to one million in 2010.

  • Our in-house biotech engineers are developing cleaner and more efficient methods of producing ethanol from wood-waste rather than food crops. We are also researching ways to combine solar power generation and other sources of clean energy with biofuels in the quest for cars that produce zero CO2 emissions

  • Here in the U.S., our new vehicles are designed to use 10% ethanol. E85 capable flex-fuel 2010 Tundras and Sequoias equipped with the 5.7-liter V8 engines are now available in select regions.

  • In Brazil, where abundant sugar cane production provides a reliable source of inexpensive fuel ethanol, Toyota is marketing a flex-fuel vehicle than can run on up to 100% biofuel.

  • Since 2005, Nippon Oil Corporation and Toyota have been jointly developing bio hydrofined diesel (BHD), a second-generation biodiesel fuel.

Hybrids: A Core Technology for the Future

In 1995, we developed the first Toyota Hybrid System, and in 2000 the Prius was introduced in the U.S. Since then we've sold more than a million hybrids here. We have also expanded and improved our hybrid line-up. Today, we offer seven hybrid vehicles - three Toyota and four Lexus.

Hybrid is a core technology that we will use for all future powertrains to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions while delivering impressive driving performance. We expect to have a hybrid version available for every Toyota passenger model in the early 2020s. Along the way, we're pleased to share some of our milestones:

  • Ten percent of our U.S. sales are hybrids and Toyota has sold nearly 75% of all the hybrids in America so far. Worldwide, we've sold more than two million, and counting.

  • The 2010 Prius contains parts made from plant-derived, carbon-neutral plastics. The newly-developed plastics known as "ecological plastics" emit less CO2 during a product lifecycle than plastics made solely from petroleum; they also help reduce petroleum use.

  • In 2009, we introduced a Toyota Certified Used Hybrids program to offer more high-quality options to customers interested in hybrid vehicles.
What type of coolant does Toyota recommend?

Ethylene-glycol type coolant should be used in your Toyota vehicle, as it provides for proper corrosion protection of aluminum components, protection at lower temperatures, and it has the ability to be used year round.

Toyota recommends Genuine Toyota Long Life Antifreeze Coolant (factory red fluid) as the first choice when maintaining your vehicle. T

oyota coolant was developed to meet the specific requirements of our engines and provides maximum protection without the use of harmful silicates. Silicates, a main ingredient in the vast majority of antifreeze coolants, can actually damage the water pump seal, causing leakage. Our coolant is a high-performance, non-silicate coolant that provides better protection for metals without deterioration of the water pump seal.

Genuine Toyota Long Life Antifreeze Coolant is available at Toyota of Whittier
